African rich sources of Calcium!! Don't break the Bank on Supplements..

Lactose intolerance is a common problem among Africans. A reason for this prevalence could be attributed to insufficient/ irregular consumption of milk at childhood due to cost of purchase. As we grow, nutrients from foods are better tolerated on the familiarity of our bodies with those foods especially from childhood. That is why we hear of intolerances in some situations. Sesame seeds: Good Calcium source!! Calcium is the most abundant major mineral in the body because of the its many roles. These roles include bone growth, cell signaling, muscle contraction and gene regulation. Therefore, improper intake of calcium from our diet puts us at risk for osteomalacia, osteoporosis, and weakness/tiredness/fragility. Model of a Healthy meal for lactation  1)  Why are exclusively breast-fed babies chubbier than the formula fed babies? Does it mean they are not healthy? Answer:  First and foremost, there is this misconception that if a a baby is breastfed exclusively, that they can become overweight. It is interesting to know that two factors play major role to the chubbiness found in breastfed babies: a) Fat content of human milk increases throughout lactation: This explains why exclusive babies are chubby and guess what? That chubbiness is so healthy for them and cute. b) Fat fraction of human milk is sensible to maternal diet: If a mother consumes more fats in form of saturated, trans-fat, the breastfed child will equally be having more of saturated fats in his milk. Therefore, mothers should aim for healthier fats in form of nuts, seeds...

Galactagogues: Breastmilk Boosters

My last  2 posts have been on breast feeding/ human milk to celebrate breast feeding week ( 1-7th August ). Today's post is on galactagogues. Galactagogues are group of substances, drugs and herbal remedies used to increase lactation and secretion of breast milk. Most women explained that one reason why they don't breastfeed or exclusively breastfeed is due to perceived insufficiency of milk for the child because of low milk production. There are various causes of low human milk production which are not limited to: a) hormonal imbalances b) low mammary glandular secretion c) Insufficient nutrient intake. d)   Anger:   Yes, you heard me right anger. When a lactating mother becomes enraged, there is high chance of stress hormone antagonizing prolactin which reduces milk production. Try and be happier...
